Rio’s Journey: From Labrador Pup to Social Media Star

Rio’s Journey: From Labrador Pup to Social Media Star - swoofi

Every pet parent remembers the day their little companion first entered their life. For Devanshi Mudgal, that day was November 4th, the day Rio, my Labrador, came home and changed everything forever.

The Day Rio Arrived

Our family had been thinking of getting a new dog for a while. We already had one earlier, but travelling with him was difficult. This time, we thought a smaller breed would be better. A Beagle sounded like the perfect choice. We even contacted a shop to inquire, only to be told that they didn’t have a Beagle at the moment. Instead, they sent us a video of a Labrador puppy.

The moment we saw Rio in that video, our decision changed instantly. There was something about him, a spark, an innocence, a pull. The shop owner told us we would need to pay half the amount in advance. Excited and eager, we transferred the money. But soon after, the owner’s phone went off. My heart sank. Panic set in. What if we had just been scammed?

We kept calling and finally got through. The shopkeeper casually explained that his battery had died. Relief washed over us. That same evening, he called again and said, “Your puppy is here. You can come pick him up.”

When we reached the shop, there were two Labrador puppies. I felt confused, not knowing how to choose. But then, one of them crawled into my arms and immediately started licking me. The other one avoided me. At that very moment, I knew, Rio was meant to be mine.

The First Scare

Bringing Rio home was pure joy, but the happiness didn’t last long. That very night, he vomited. Fear gripped me because my father was already against bringing a dog home. I quietly cleaned everything, hoping things would get better.

But the next morning, on November 5th, Rio’s stool had blood in it. I broke down crying. In just one day, I had grown deeply attached to him. The thought of losing him was unbearable. I called the shop owner, who casually suggested, “Return this one and take the other puppy.”

That made me furious. How could anyone think of swapping a life like an object? I told him firmly, “If this were a human child, would you replace him? No. So I will not replace Rio either. I’ll treat him, whatever it takes.”

And so began our long battle. For five days, I took Rio to the vet daily for injections. He was so tiny, barely a month old. Yet, he surprised everyone. Unlike other dogs and cats at the clinic who cried in pain, Rio never cried. He sat quietly, braving everything like a warrior. That’s when I realized he was not just a puppy. He was a fighter.

The Vaccination Struggles

Soon, Rio’s vaccination time arrived. But just then, he stopped eating properly. His diet of Petlac (a dog cerelac) and starter food wasn’t enough, so someone suggested giving it with milk. For a while, he ate happily, but soon, he developed severe loose motions. His vaccination had to be delayed.

The vet scolded me, warning that delaying vaccinations during a parvo outbreak was dangerous. His words scared me, but all I could do was care for Rio with everything I had. Slowly, after weeks of struggle, he recovered, and finally, his vaccinations began. It felt like a huge victory that my little fighter had made it through.

A Digital Beginning

I’ve always loved clicking pictures and recording videos. Rio was so full of cute antics that my phone storage soon overflowed. Deleting them was impossible every wag, every tumble, every silly face felt precious. That’s when I thought of creating an Instagram account for him.

I converted my mom’s old account into Rio’s profile and began uploading his photos and reels. At first, the views were modest 50, maybe 60. But that didn’t matter. My only goal was to keep his memories safe.

Then, one day, two months later, a reel suddenly got 13,000 views. We were thrilled! But the excitement faded when the numbers went back to normal. For months, Rio’s posts hovered at a few hundred views. We didn’t mind, though this wasn’t about fame.

And then it happened. One reel skyrocketed to a million views. For the first time, Rio’s cuteness had captured hearts far beyond our circle. We were overjoyed.

From Reels to Recognition

After that, Rio’s content began picking up pace. Almost every month, one of his videos would cross a million views. By September last year, he reached 10,000 followers. For us, it was surreal. We had never imagined this.

With followers came collaborations. At first, they weren’t paid, but free goodies started arriving for Rio. It wasn’t easy, though. Shooting with a puppy is no small task. He would sometimes scratch with his tiny nails, bite playfully, or refuse to sit still. Some brands even asked us to reshoot, making the work twice as hard.

No one really sees the effort behind a few seconds of content. They just see the final video and move on. But for us, it meant hours of patience, scratches, retakes, and laughter. Still, every time I saw Rio’s happy face, it felt worth it.

The Dark Side of Fame

Of course, not everything about social media was positive. Alongside love and appreciation came hate. Some people left cruel comments, even targeting Rio, an innocent, voiceless soul.

At first, it hurt. I would get angry and wonder, how could anyone hate a dog? How could someone’s heart be so bitter that they would insult a creature who can’t even defend himself?

But over time, I learned to ignore the negativity. I realized hate says more about the person giving it than the one receiving it. Today, I don’t let such comments affect me. For every hateful word, there are thousands of hearts that adore Rio.

A Celebration

Now, Rio has 50,000+ followers. For us, this journey is nothing short of a miracle. What began as a simple way to save phone storage turned into a community of people who adore him, cheer for him, and shower him with love.

When I look back, I remember that sick little one-month-old puppy who almost didn’t make it. The puppy who braved injections without tears. The puppy I refused to “exchange.” Today, that same Rio is not just healthy and strong but also loved by thousands around the world.

For me, Rio isn’t just a pet. He’s my child, my fighter, my little star. And no matter how many followers he gains, or how viral his reels go, the most important thing is this – Rio made our family complete.
